Welcome to New Heart for Life, a podcast focused on principles to live a fit and fulfilled life. I am Dan Williams. And in this episode, I'm going to talk about the principle of goals. But first, I want to start with a powerful story. One that has inspired and touched my life greatly. It's a story about a life changing moment that taught me the true power of goals. As I lay in my hospital bed, recovering from open heart surgery, and battling pneumonia. My surgeon emphasized the vital and critical need for me to start walking. But I felt oddly powerless, unable to even most have the courage or strength to stand. I then reflected on the heroic efforts of my medical team that fought tirelessly to keep me alive. Those thoughts sparked a quote, a quote that echoed within me. If it is to be, it's up to me. With all the strength I could muster, I found the courage to call out to the nurse and tell her I was ready to walk. She arrived with an oxygen tank and I began my recovery with the goal of reaching an artificial Christmas tree at the end of the ICU hallway. It was a simple goal, but it drove me forward in my pursuit of recovery. With every step I visualized with the tree represented Hope, Life and the promise of a healthier tomorrow. When I finally reached it, a sense of overwhelming accomplishment washed over me. I had done it. That experience change me forever. I learned that true strength comes from within and that with determination, even the most colossal challenges can be overcome by setting small goals and moving towards them. One of the biggest challenges of goal setting is if we don't see the ultimate result right away. In his book, The compound effect, Darren Hardy writes about action compounding over time, and how patients consistency and sustained self belief is how we create change. This experience was a reminder that each and every one of us possesses the power within to rise to any challenge and achieve greatness. When you're feeling stuck, or perilous, I hope the story of Christmas tree aspires you to keep moving towards your goals. One baby step at a time while having the mindset that if it's the bee itself to me, I hope this episode helped. If so, simply subscribe at new heart for life.com I appreciate you spreading awareness. It means the world to me. I will catch you on the next episode when I will be talking about the principle of consistency. Until then to your new heart for life.
