Adversity

Life is unpredictable.

It is how we choose to respond, that sets us apart from the crowd.

Every person who has achieved greatness has dealt with adversity at some point in their life.

Oprah Winfrey was fired from her first television anchor job. But she refused to give up and strived to become one of the most triumphant media Mongols of our time.

J K Rowling was rejected by multiple publishers for her Harry Potter manuscript. But she kept writing and became one of the bestselling authors of all time. Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison for his belief in human rights. But he never gave up and eventually became the first black president of South Africa.

These examples, show us that adversity is not a permanent state. It's a temporary setback that can be turned into an opportunity.

In my new heart-for-life story, I have encountered numerous adversities.

Despite my gold medals and accomplishments, people often overlook the adversity I faced, including being admitted to the Veteran's Hospital for a stent procedure due to a heart attack. The stent placements resulted in multiple heart attacks, leading to the necessity of open heart surgery. My heart surgeon revealed that he would never operate immediately under three conditions: cardiac arrest, blood thinners, or pneumonia. Remarkably, I had all three. The urgency of the situation left me no choice but to operate as my life was at stake. I spent five weeks in the hospital, battling the toughest adversity of my life and realizing the need for a lifestyle change. My near-death experience sparked a commitment to lifelong fitness, reigniting my passion for running from my younger days and propelling me towards a new life of competitive masters track. Thus began my New Heart for Life comeback story, inspiring others that it is never too late to start, regardless of your age, fitness passion, or the severity of your experiences.

On my journey towards the podium. I faced many challenges that knocked on my door without warning. Here are a couple;

In 2019 as I was crossing the 200-meter finish line at the senior Olympics in Albuquerque. I broke my ribs due to the difficult combination of high altitude and heat. Though I was in a great deal of pain and discomfort. I refused to let that setback define my experience at the games.

In 2022, shortly after returning from the national senior games in Fort Lauderdale. I experienced a sudden stroke.

One moment, my wife and I were laughing and the next I was unable to speak coherently and terror had overtaken me. I was rushed to the hospital, unsure of what the future would hold.

But, through the love and support of my family and the incredible medical professionals who treated me. I was able to persevere and recover.

These became defining moments that strike to my commitment to train and compete.

Just as iron is forged by being heated in a fire, Adversity can help to shape and strengthen our character.

We should embrace adversity as an opportunity to grow and become stronger. Rather than seeing it as a setback. One of my most famous quotes on overcoming adversity is from Muhammad Ali. He said. I hated every minute of training. But I said, don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.

Adversity, as the ultimate teacher, has a profound ability to shape our lives. As the saying goes, "It's in the cracks that light shines through." So, when you face difficult times, do not be disheartened. Instead, embrace them as catalysts for personal growth and transformation. Keep pushing forward, for within the challenges lie invaluable lessons waiting to be learned. Embrace these lessons, for they have the power to guide you toward a brighter and more fulfilling future.
