Welcome to New Heart for Life with Dan Williams, a podcast dedicated to achieving a fit and fulfilling life. On today's episode, we will be talking with Dan who not only conquered open-heart surgery but also went on to be a gold medalist at the senior Olympics. Dan's story is a true inspiration to all, regardless of age, fitness level, or past challenges. As Dan gears up for the upcoming Veteran Golden Age Games, he joins us today to share his insights. Let's dive in!"
Host: First, Dan, thank you for your service to our country.
Dan: You're welcome. It was an honor to serve.
Host: And could you share with our audience what the Veteran Golden Age Games is about?
Dan: Sure.
The Veteran Golden Age Games is an event that celebrates veterans who receive healthcare from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. It is an exciting opportunity for veterans to showcase their talents and compete in a variety of sports and activities.
Host: In your experience How has the VA changed over the years with its health emphasis toward veterans?
Dan: The Veterans Health Administration has made efforts to emphasize proactive health and fitness for veterans, particularly through events like the Golden Age Games. These games were specifically created for veterans over the age of 55, with the aim of promoting physical activity and healthy living. The games include a variety of sports and recreational activities such as bowling, track & field, golf, and swimming. This emphasis on proactive health and fitness is part of a larger effort by the VA to promote overall wellness among veterans and to encourage them to take an active role in their own health and well-being.
Host: What inspired you to participate in the Veteran Golden Age Games?
Dan: Well, foremost I will be representing the Martinsburg VA Hospital. This is where I receive awesome medical attention and I am so appreciative to the doctors, nurses, and staff for their support and care for veterans. And, the VA coaches that have prepared me. I am so proud to represent VA Martinsburg in the upcoming games. The VA medical teams literally saved my life through my emergency heart surgery.
Host: How ironic that you have now progressed from your journey as a veteran patient to now competing as a veteran masters athlete.
Dan: Yes, it's been a remarkable journey. I am so grateful for my second chance at life, and I feel like I want to take full advantage of it. Competing in the Veteran Golden Age Games is a way for me to inspire others who may be going through a challenging time. It's also a great way for me to give back to those who have supported and helped me along the way.
Host: Dan what do you see as the benefits that Veterans receive as being part of
the VAGAG?
Dan: The National Veterans Golden Age Games promotes physical activity among older veterans which offers many benefits such as reducing the risk of falling, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. It also improves stamina and muscle strength for those with chronic conditions, and mood, and can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Physical activity is also found to help veterans with PTSD and promotes both physical and mental well-being, including safety, balance, healthy eating, getting enough sleep, building relationships, and lowering stress levels.
Host: Well, it's truly inspiring to see what you have accomplished and the awareness you are bringing to the Veteran Golden Age Games. We wish you the best of luck in your competitions.
Dan: Thank you. I appreciate it.
